Confederate Officer Servants' Passes and Letter, 1863.

This collection consists of six passes for servants of Confederate officers and one letter. Five of the passes were signed by Major General James B. McPherson, an officer of the Union. These passes permitted the servants to travel across Union lines to meet officers in the 41st and 42nd Regiments of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry. The letter, written by Confederate soldier Joseph B. Smith on July 8, 1863, is a request to permit a servant to travel across Union lines to meet his legal owner. The letter also contains the reply from Union Colonel J.A. Wilson that states the request will not be granted as servants can no longer be compelled to meet their masters across Union lines against their will.
